History Club on Amager: Peasant Dialect in Copenhagen — Sundby Bibliotek, Copenhagen

For centuries, fishermen and market gardeners from the Amager and forest regions sold fish and vegetables at Copenhagen's markets, maintaining close contact with the city's residents. Normally, dialects like these would fade or disappear - but the opposite happened here. Was it a marketing strategy reminiscent of traditional folk costumes, or were there other reasons behind the resilience of these regional dialects?

Pia Quist and Bjarne S. Hansen attempt to provide the answer. They are respectively a professor and educational consultant at the Institute for Nordic Studies and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, and in 2025 they published the book "Rural Speech in Copenhagen" together.

The event takes place in the Hall at Sundby Library. The History Club on Amager is run by Kvarterhuset, Islands Brygge Library, and Sundby Library - everyone is welcome, and the events are publicly accessible.
