Ovartaci - The Overtossen from Risskov
Trekanten - Bibliotek og Kulturhus, Aalborg
Louis Marcussen (1894-1985) chose to call himself Ovartaci - overtoss (chief fool) - because he believed that a hospital with senior physicians naturally ought to have one. He spent 56 years as a psychiatric patient and during that time produced an artistic body of work that is only now gaining real recognition.
His life behind the art is anything but ordinary. As a young man he lived six years in Argentina among indigenous peoples in the jungle. He undertook mental journeys to previous lives in Egypt, China and India, underwent a gender transition and cultivated Buddhism and philosophy. All of this leaves its mark on a work that spans many forms of expression.
Internationally, he is represented at the Venice Biennale's main exhibition in 2022, and from September 2026 to March 2027 he can be seen at Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.
Anne Valbjørn Odgaard, who has just published the monograph 'Ovartaci. Wild, Visionary, World Artist', gives a lecture about him with selected works as backdrop. In Trekanten's Cafe there is the possibility of food and refreshments.
