When we flush waste down the toilet, few of us think about what it's actually worth. Human and animal excrement is rich in phosphorus - a limited resource on the EU's list of critical raw materials. Recent estimates show we'll run out in 50-75 years, and without phosphorus we cannot produce enough food to feed the world's population.

Part of the solution lies in recycling phosphorus from phosphorus-rich sources like wastewater sludge from treatment plants. A chemical engineer and wastewater manager from VandCenter Syd will discuss how phosphorus-rich wastewater can be transformed into virgin phosphorus fertilizer - while also removing pollutants and utilizing resources such as energy, precipitation chemicals, and cement substitutes.
