When Death Enters the Family

When serious illness or death strikes a family, children are not left out. They sense the atmosphere, the silence, and the changed routines - often long before anyone puts it into words.

In the lecture "When Death Moves Into the Family", psychologist Martin Blinkenberg Lytje focuses on what children and families experience, and what they need in terms of support when death becomes part of everyday life. Drawing on research, practical experience, and quotes from children and parents, he explores how children understand death, how they navigate between grief and ordinary childhood, and how adults can support and include them with honesty and care.

The lecture is aimed at relatives, volunteers, and professionals who want to learn more about children, grief, and family life in the face of serious illness and death.

Martin Lytje is a psychologist with a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and is affiliated with the Center for Crisis Psychology at the University of Bergen. For many years, he has researched and worked with children, young people, and families in grief, and advises professionals, organizations, and institutions on how children are best supported. He is also the author of several books. The event is part of the autumn's Open Hospice programme, supported by Lolland Municipality.
