Lecture with Bente Scavenius at Roskilde Cathedral

On Monday, 25 September 2026 at 19:00, art critic and art educator Bente Scavenius gives a lecture at Roskilde Cathedral. Doors open at 18:30.

The lecture explores Sophia Kalkau's contemporary artwork "24 flags from the box of transformations", currently on display in the cathedral. Scavenius examines the encounter between Kalkau's 24 flags and the church space - and asks whether contemporary art can match nearly 1,000 years of architecture, art, and church history. Can contemporary art challenge our view of religious image tradition? What does art bring to the church space, and what does the church space bring to art?

Bente Scavenius is one of Denmark's most renowned art critics and has received both the Rosenkjær Prize and the N.L. Høyen Medal for her art education work. A broad audience knows her from the TV programmes Art Quiz, Denmark's Best Portrait Painter, and Scavenius and Kær Travelling Through Art History, as well as from the documentary World Women.
