The Siege of Copenhagen 1659

In 1658, King Charles X Gustav led his Swedish army across the ice from Fredericia to Zealand and forced Denmark into the humiliating Peace of Roskilde. Few believed Copenhagen and Frederick III would survive another attack - but the king answered with the words "I will die in my nest", and the city's population followed him. The result was nearly two years of siege and a decisive Swedish assault in the winter of 1659, which cost the Swedish army one of the era's greatest military defeats.

On this guided tour, we follow the somewhat hidden traces of the war and see where the siege and assault took place - as well as where absolute monarchy, which the war paved the way for, was later introduced. Along the way we meet the central figures: the king's loyal half-brother, his sister Leonora Christina (who ended up in the Blue Tower for treason) and her husband Corfitz Ulfeldt, considered Denmark's greatest traitor. We also hear about the city's defenders - Mayor Nansen, Thuresen as leader of the citizen militia - and about the "lazy" Swedish spy who may have cost Sweden victory.
