Let's Talk About... Gustave Caillebotte — Institut Français, Frederiksberg

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Gustave Caillebotte's death, the Musée d'Orsay has placed the Impressionist painter (1848-1894) at the centre of the exhibition "Caillebotte: Peindre les hommes". Philippe Puisais reviews the exhibition and highlights a body of work that was long overshadowed by Caillebotte's better-known Impressionist contemporaries.

Caillebotte came from a wealthy family and managed to acquire over 70 works by Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Millet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley. His own paintings introduced new male figures: the urban worker, the man on the balcony, the sportsman and the man in his private bathroom. At a time when bourgeois patriarchy was strong, but women's liberation movement was taking shape, Caillebotte raised profound questions about the male condition in the midst of Impressionism and modernity.

The lecture is held in easily understandable French and takes place on Wednesday, 21 October at 13:00 at Institut français du Danemark, Rolighedsvej 37, Frederiksberg. Price: 125 DKK (ticket fee included).
