Coffee with Aske Bosselmann, Anders Barfod and Kjeld Hermansen — KU.BE, Frederiksberg

Three researchers examine coffee from every angle - from the plant's biology and cultivation to the impact of climate change on the future of coffee and the health aspects of drinking it.

Botanist Anders Barfod has researched tropical plant resources for more than four decades. He introduces the botany of the coffee plant, including the latest exploration of its wild relatives, and explains what the coffee bean actually is within the fruit - and how it goes from the ripe fruit on the coffee bush to the steaming cup. Natural resource economist Aske Skovmand Bosselmann discusses cultivation: millions of farmers in the "coffee belt" around the equator produce enough coffee for the world to enjoy 30,000 cups per second. He examines how coffee cultivation historically led to deforestation, but under certain conditions today plays a completely different role. He also covers the latest research on sustainable coffee and Danes' consumption since coffee was introduced to Denmark in 1665.

Diabetes and nutrition researcher Kjeld Hermansen concludes by addressing the many claims about coffee's effects on the body - whether coffee causes cancer, heart disease or shortens life, and what research actually shows about coffee's connection to common diseases such as type 2 diabetes and neuropsychiatric disorders.
