Jeroen Berwaerts (b. 1975) is a Belgian trumpeter who moves freely across baroque, contemporary music and jazz, appearing as soloist with orchestras including the NHK Symphony, Vienna Symphony and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Since 1999 he has held the principal trumpet chair at the NDR Radio Symphony Hamburg, and since 2008 he has been Professor of Trumpet at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, as well as Professor in Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has given numerous world premieres - among them Toshio Hosokawa's trumpet concerto Im Nebel and Tobias Broström's double concerto Nigredo: The Dark Night of the Soul (2019, with Håkan Hardenberger) - and alongside his trumpet career he completed a degree in jazz singing at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent.
Berwaerts will premiere a new trumpet concerto written for him by Britta Byström with Camerata Bern in October 2025.
In the 2025/26 season, he will perform Shostakovich's opus 35 with Alexander Melnikov and Mahler Chamber Orchestra in Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin.
In June 2024, a CD recording of Hosokawa's trumpet concerto Im Nebel with Residentie Orkest under Jun Märkl was released on the Naxos label.
In 2019, Berwaerts and Håkan Hardenberger premiered Tobias Broström's double concerto for two trumpets, Nigredo: The Dark Night of the Soul.
