About

La Cuerda y el Grito - 'The String and the Scream' - is a duo formed by cellist Sofía Escamilla and vocalist Yuko Cornale, both based in Mexico City. Their work sits at the intersection of contemporary music, free improvisation and sound art, with voice and cello transformed through extended techniques, real-time digital processing and sound objects. Escamilla is a Mexican cellist, composer and sound artist active in electroacoustic and multidisciplinary contexts; Cornale is a Bolivian-Italian performer and improviser whose voice serves as the central instrument. The project was developed across 2025-2026 and has been presented in Mexico and Europe.

    The duo performs on September 22, 2026 at Echoraum in Vienna as part of velak-gala #146.

  • 2026-04

    On April 16, 2026, the duo performed at Auditorio Blas Galindo in Mexico City's Centro Nacional de las Artes (Cenart) together with the Italian trio HackOut!

  • 2026-03

    Ibermúsicas and the region of Emilia-Romagna both selected the artists for a joint tour project with HackOut! in Mexico and Italy in 2026.

  • 2025-2026

    Sofía Escamilla participated as a live cellist at UNAM's Choreographic Workshop in 2025 and was selected in 2023 as a composer for the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra's Orchestral Technique Workshop.
