Matt Choboter is a Canadian pianist and composer based in Copenhagen, working at the intersection of avant-jazz, free improvisation and contemporary classical music. He holds an Advanced Post Diploma in Composition from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory and has built a distinctive practice around a self-developed microtonal prepared piano that draws on South Indian classical music and Balinese gamelan. A core member of Juniper Fuse Ensemble alongside Lotte Anker and Simon Toldam, he was nominated for Jazz Composer of the Year at the 2025 Danish Music Awards.
Choboter released the solo album Visceral Totems: Improvisations for Microtonal Prepared Piano on ILK Music on June 26, 2026 - ten spontaneously composed pieces recorded in Copenhagen.
Choboter's major work Emergence Totem receives its world premiere on September 10, 2026 at Koncertkirken in Roskilde with Juniper Fuse Ensemble and FIGURA Ensemble, followed by a performance at KU.BE Theatre on September 30.
Choboter and saxophonist Calum Builder performed at Copenhagen Winter Jazz Festival (KU.BE) on February 24, 2026, and the album And Then There Were The Sounds of Birds had its release concert at Koncertkirken the day after.
Choboter was nominated for Composer of the Year at Danish Music Awards Jazz 2025 for the album Nagual (Kairos Music) with Juniper Fuse Ensemble.
Juniper Fuse Ensemble's album Nagual was released on Kairos Music in June 2025 with Choboter's compositions for chamber ensemble.
