About

Montañera is the solo project of Bogotá-born, London-based singer-songwriter María Mónica Gutiérrez, who has been crafting her own sound since 2017 at the intersection of Colombian folk traditions, ambient electronics and experimental pop. The project name - a term from her family's Paisa region that once carried a derogatory edge - she has reclaimed as a badge of pride. Her third album A Flor de Piel (2023, Western Vinyl) drew critical praise from Pitchfork (8.0), The Guardian and Iggy Pop on BBC Radio, and her music has featured in Netflix series including Wild District and La Venganza de las Juanas. She also performs with the bands Suricato and Ságan.
