Niels Kirkegaard is a Danish guitarist and co-founder of the pop band På Slaget 12, which he formed in Aarhus with Ann-Mette Elten - who later became his wife. The band's 1986 debut album produced the enduring hit "Hjem til Århus", now one of the best-known songs in Danish popular music. Over four decades the band has sold more than a million albums and played thousands of concerts across Denmark.
At Slaget 12 announced from the stage that the band is stopping after 40 years - they will play concerts for the rest of 2026 as a farewell tour and will then stop touring.
The band played their last concert in Aarhus at Tivoli Friheden's Midsummer event as part of the farewell tour.
In 2026, Slaget 12 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the debut album with an anniversary tour that brings together highlights from the entire career.
The band released the album "Hjerterne fri" - the first Danish-language studio album in 18 years - after Niels Kirkegaard met lyricist Roar Amundsen in 2011.
