About

Phil Minton is a British vocalist and trumpeter, born 2 November 1940 in Torquay, Devon. He started out as a jazz trumpeter in the late 1950s and sang with the Mike Westbrook Orchestra from the early 1960s, but it is as a vocal improviser that he has made his deepest mark - deploying a range that runs from whispers and gurgles to full-throated screams, treating the voice as raw sonic material rather than a melodic tool. Since the 1970s he has collaborated with most of the key figures in European free improvisation, including Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann and Veryan Weston, and since the 1980s he has also led the Feral Choir, a vocal workshop project for non-singers that has performed in over twenty countries.
