Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum occupies the listed Viebæltegård on Grubbemøllevej - a poorhouse and workhouse built in 1872 and the best-preserved complex of its kind in the Nordic region. It is the only museum in Europe dedicated solely to the history of social welfare, with exhibitions covering how society treated its most vulnerable: the poor, the sick, the homeless and orphaned children. The courtyards are still enclosed by barbed wire, and the preserved dormitories, dining halls and bathrooms give a concrete sense of life behind the walls from 1872 to 1974.
