Guided Tour of the Poorhouse

Join one of the museum's experienced guides on a tour of Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum, before museum director Sarah Smed and filmmaker Christian Bonke meet for a conversation about veterans past and present. When you pass through the gate, you step into an authentic time capsule from 1872-1974. During this period, the site functioned as Svendborg's poorhouse and workhouse. Here lived those who could not fend for themselves, alongside those society wished to ignore. Men and women. Adults and children. On the tour, you will visit the rooms and courtyards where residents lived and worked. You will see, among other things, the bathroom where newcomers were washed, deloused, and dressed in the poorhouse's clothes, and the dining hall, where three meals were served daily. You will hear about the loss of rights and the division into the "worthy" and "unworthy". Through work and fixed routines, it was believed that the poor could be set on the right path.
