HANS LYNGE - An Evening About the Author with Jessie Kleemann, Kirsten Thisted and Jens Heinrich

Litteratursalonen NordOrd at Nordatlantens Brygge focuses this evening on the work of Hans Lynge with presentations and discussions by Jessie Kleemann, Kirsten Thisted and Jens Heinrich.

Hans Lynge (1906-1988) was a Greenlandic painter, sculptor, author, social commentator and politician who throughout his artistic career opposed the Danish colonial power's infantilization of the Greenlandic people. His novel The Will of the Invisible (1938) is considered a masterpiece of Greenlandic literature and was reissued by Gladiator publishers in 2018. Lynge is also included in the new literary canon, and Gladiator has collected his three memoirs - Nûk (1978), Greenland's Inner Life - Memories from Childhood (1981) and Greenland's Inner Life - Memories from Seminary Years (1988) - in one volume.

The three participants illuminate the author's work and its significance, then and now. Jessie Kleemann is a Greenlandic performance artist, author and poet who debuted with the poetry collection Tallaat (1997) and most recently published the multilingual Arkhticos doloros (2021); she has previously presented Hans Lynge's work. Kirsten Thisted is a lecturer at the Institute for Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen and adjunct professor at Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland in Nuuk; she is an expert in Greenlandic literature and has written afterwords to both new editions of Lynge's works. Jens Heinrich is a historian and co-author of Greenland - A Journey from the Earliest Times to a Modern Society (with Bo Lidegaard and Mira Maria Jo Kleist) and head of representation for the Greenland Representation in Copenhagen.

The event takes place in Danish and lasts approximately 90 minutes including questions from the audience. Doors open 45 minutes before the start, and seating is unreserved - please arrive in good time. The mentioned books are sold at special prices in the café.
