Coffee

The coffee plant is a perennial crop with enormous significance - both economically and culturally. Millions of farmers in the so-called 'coffee belt' around the equator together produce enough coffee for the world to consume 30,000 cups per second.

It requires vast areas, and historically coffee cultivation has led to deforestation and loss of biodiversity. Under certain conditions, however, it plays a very different role today. The lecture explores how farmers around the world not only produce coffee beans but also ecosystem services that we can all benefit from - including in relation to climate change, which is a central theme in sustainable coffee.
