Club Klassisk: Mahler's Fourth Symphony

With his first three symphonies, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) established himself as a composer of grand orchestral works rooted in life's weighty, existential questions. His fourth symphony took a different path: he drew inspiration from Central European fairy tales, traditional folk songs, and early Romantic aesthetics - an approach most contemporary composers had abandoned by the turn of the 20th century.

Critics and audiences received the work with marked skepticism; its apparent musical naivety confused more than it delighted. Over time, perceptions shifted, and today the symphony is counted among Mahler's most beloved works. It was precisely its melodic quality that contributed to renewed interest in Mahler in the years following World War II.

Randers Library's music educator Mik Stegger introduces Mahler and the symphony in an arrangement designed so everyone can follow along - the only requirement is curiosity about classical music.
