Trade, Crafts, Harbours and Courts - Lecture

Museum inspector Carsten Porskrog Rasmussen presents a lecture on the history of four South Jutland towns - Haderslev, Tønder, Aabenraa and Sønderborg - from the 1500s to 1864.

In 1769, these four towns were larger and wealthier than most provincial towns in the rest of Denmark. The lecture covers both the towns' history and what can still be seen today. Historically, the parallels run in pairs: Haderslev and Tønder thrived on large and wealthy hinterlands, while Aabenraa and Sønderborg owed their development primarily to maritime industries. In terms of architecture, the gable-house model is common to all four towns, but best preserved in Tønder. Haderslev has the largest collection of Renaissance houses followed by Sønderborg, while 18th-century architecture is more richly represented in Aabenraa and Tønder than in any other Danish provincial town.

The lecture is arranged by Tønder Municipality Libraries in collaboration with the Local History Association for Old Tønder Municipality and Tønder Folk University. Duration: 2 hours.
