Why and When Are We Attracted to Strong Leaders? — Hovedbiblioteket, Aarhus

Do we choose our political leaders based on impressions of their personality? Research suggests we do, to some extent - but what kind of personality do we actually prefer to give power to?

The answer depends on both our political stance and how we perceive the world. When uncertainty increases - as with wars in Ukraine, the conflict between the USA and Iran, or the threat of terrorist attacks - we are drawn toward strong, dominant leadership figures. This has consequences: we become more willing to accept breaches of democratic principles from these same "strong leaders", and male politicians are slightly preferred.

Lasse Laustsen, lecturer in political science at Aarhus University and researcher in political psychology and behaviour, examines the psychological mechanisms behind these patterns and discusses what they mean for democracy.

The event is part of Folkeuniversitetet's knowledge festival Hearts & Minds - find the full programme on Hearts & Minds. Venue: Lille Sal.
