The Nutcracker

The Royal Danish Ballet's family production of The Nutcracker is performed on Tuesday, 29 December 2026 at 19:30 in the Great Hall at Musikhuset Aarhus, Thomas Jensens Allé 2. The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra plays live from the pit.

The ballet follows Marie, who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift from her godfather Drosselmeier - and at midnight she is taken on a journey to the land of plenty, where she meets dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, the ice-cold Snow Queen, sugar fairies, cheeky mice and marzipan shepherdesses. The story is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's tale from 1816, and the music is Tchaikovsky's famous score from 1892.

The choreography is George Balanchine's version from 1954. Set and costume design by Anthony Ward, lighting design by Anders Poll, and the production is conducted by Damian Iorio. Recommended from age 7.
