What will the new government do with the EU?

DEO brings together three members of the European Parliament and a Danish MP for a debate on the government's EU policy direction. The panel consists of Niels Fuglsang (Social Democrats), Asger Christensen (Venstre) and Per Clausen (Red-Green Alliance) from the European Parliament, plus Frederik Bloch Münster, political spokesperson for the Conservative People's Party.

The government has broken with the cautious EU line that long characterized Danish politics, instead betting on greater Danish influence and closer European cooperation. The debate questions whether this is the right course - and how Denmark should position itself in an EU dealing with war in Ukraine, geopolitical tensions, and an escalating power struggle over technology and trade between the USA, China and Europe.

Among the concrete questions on the agenda are: How much power should the EU have in security policy? Should the veto right in defence be abolished in favour of qualified majority voting? How should the EU regulate tech giants and social media? And what changes to the EU's agricultural policy should Denmark work towards if the country wants to be a frontrunner in green transition?

About the panellists:
Per Clausen sits in the left-wing group GUE/NGL and is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL). Niels Fuglsang sits in the S&D group and is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC). Asger Christensen sits in Renew Europe and is a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) and the Fisheries Committee (PECH). Frederik Bloch Münster is also environment spokesperson, agriculture and food spokesperson, and spokesperson for South Schleswig and the German minority.
