Book Club: 'Dune'

The year is 10,191, and the setting is the desert planet Arrakis - home to melange, a substance that extends life and is essential for space travel. In Frank Herbert's 'Dune' from 1965, we follow young Paul Atreides, whose family is granted control of Arrakis by the emperor, and thus control of the melange. It quickly proves to be a trap, and Paul seeks refuge with the Fremen people, who have survived the desert for generations and guard secrets unknown to outsiders.

The novel is considered one of the most influential books of the 20th century and quickly gained cult status within science fiction. It has left its mark on works such as 'Star Wars', 'Hunger Games', and 'Game of Thrones' - and behind the sci-fi framework, it deals with politics, resources, power, and manipulation.
