Women's History of Christianity

This lecture explores women's history of Christianity - from the earliest Jewish communities and first Christian congregations to Danish church history. Along the way, we encounter prophetesses, saints, mystics, and female religious leaders who left decisive marks on Christianity's development, yet have too often been erased from history.

We examine both well-known and lesser-known women from Christian texts - not only those who became part of the Bible, but also those appearing in texts outside the official canon. Goddesses and female demons also emerge when one looks carefully. The foundation is historical sources and archaeological findings.

Sisse Marie Kromann holds a master's degree in the history of religions and founded Women's History of Religion. She communicates research-based knowledge about women, gender, and sexuality in religious history through lectures, articles, and consulting work.
