Spiritual Preparation #2: Room for Enlightenment

Grundtvig was in no doubt: enlightenment belonged to the people, not to scholars alone. This comes through clearly in the poem "Is Light Only for the Learned" from 1839 - also known as "Enlightenment" - where he writes:

"Enlightenment shall be our desire
If it is only about the sieve
But first and foremost with the people's voice
Enlightenment about life
It springs from the people's deeds
And grows as it is cradled..."

This evening event revolves around Grundtvig's ideals of education and his view of humanity. Jes Fabricius Møller - PhD, lecturer at the Saxo Institute at the University of Copenhagen and chairman of the board of Grundtvig's Folk High School in Hillerød - is currently publishing a new book on Grundtvig and will speak from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. with librarian Jan M. Johansen about Grundtvig's ideas of enlightenment and why education remains a recurring theme.

From 5:45 to 6:15 p.m., librarian Ann Luther Torp recommends novels focusing on enlightenment and education for further reading pleasure.

The event is the second in the series "Spiritual Reinforcement?", which uses literature as a starting point to explore how people can find their footing in a world marked by constant, radical change. It takes place in the Hall at Roskilde Library.
