The Danish Emigrants to America - Author Evening with Jesper Bugge Kold

In autumn 2026, Jesper Bugge Kold concludes his romantic trilogy about Danish emigrants to America. Drawing on his three novels, he tells the story of approximately 300,000 Danes who emigrated from 1850 onwards - a figure representing around 10% of Denmark's total population at that time.

The inspiration for the trilogy came from Jesper's own relative Peter Julius Christensen, who left Denmark for America in 1879. His letters form the basis for the story of Johanne and Jens, a Danish family who emigrate the same year in hopes of a better life. The series consists of "Where the Wind Turns", "Where the Fire Burns" and "Where the Journey Ends".

Jesper Bugge Kold made his debut in 2014 with "Winter Men", which was nominated for BogForums Debut Prize and has since achieved bestseller status in both the USA and Germany. In 2021 he published "The Girl from the Great White Ship" with Mich Vraa, and the following year the two followed up with "Three Days in April". Kold was born in 1972, grew up in Rødovre and now lives on South Funen. He holds a degree from IT University Copenhagen and works daily at a library.

The event is a collaboration between Stoholm Church Parish Council, Ældre Sagen Fjends-Karup, Sport på Tværs and the Civic Association v/Trivselspiloterne, and is held with support from the Danish Arts Foundation.
