Identity Politics

Thomas Holtug characterizes identity politics and examines the phenomenon across both the left and right wings. A central question is whether identity politics conflicts with Enlightenment thinking - as some claim - or whether it can instead be justified on the basis of liberal democratic core values.

Concrete examples in the lecture include cancel culture, including the removal of statues of historical figures perceived as morally problematic, and cultural appropriation, where members of one cultural group adopt aspects of another group's culture. The lecture is based on Holtug's new book: Identity Politics - Left and Right (Oxford University Press 2025).
