The fight against terror united NATO countries, but the US simultaneously introduced a series of restrictions on freedom that are still felt today. Intelligence services gained more power, and the war on terror left its mark deep into Europe - not just in Afghanistan, but also in Iraq. In Denmark, the debate was sharp: 50 percent opposed the Iraq War. Now we see a backlash, with the US increasingly turning inward. The wars did not bring the peace the US had hoped for, and Europeans are left with an America pulling away and a Europe that must fend for itself.
