Viborg as a National Cultural Heritage Site - Preservation and Development Hand in Hand

In 2025, an expert panel appointed by the Ministry of Culture designated 16 Danish cities with exceptional cultural-historical significance - cities at the very top in terms of well-preserved and distinctive historical urban environments. Viborg was one of them, partly due to its role as a cathedral city, seat of the provincial assembly, and a key point along the Hærvejen route.

On Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m. at Hovedbiblioteket in Viborg, architect Arne Høi will discuss how the panel selected the cities and what requirements and expectations the designation places on municipalities going forward. Høi is an architect MAA specializing in preservation and development of built cultural heritage, director of the Royal Academy's Institute for Architecture and Culture, and a member of the expert panel himself.

Following the lecture, By og Land Viborg invites local stakeholders from civil society, the municipality, and the business community to a dialogue about the balance between preservation and development - including how historic buildings, streets, and stories can play an active role in the city's future development.

The event is organized in collaboration with By og Land Viborg, the local branch of the national association By og Land, which works to preserve and develop architecturally and culturally valuable buildings, landscapes, and urban environments in Denmark.
