Treatment of Shelter Walls with Clay and Hempcrete

Clay and Hempcrete Workshop: 9 October – 25 October 2026, Himmelbjerggården - Bines, Ry. Tickets cost 750–950 kr.

As part of the Permaculture Festival 2026, six different wall types were built in a shelter structure. This workshop completes the finishing of the shelter walls - both interior and exterior - using clay and hempcrete products. We review the different constructions and work hands-on with selected wall types and surface treatments.

The constructions we work with:
- Light clay walls with straw (middle section of the low wall)
- Clay walls made from clay bricks shaped with straw (left side of the low wall below the window)
- Clay-straw walls with high clay content, freely formed over a timber frame (gable facing the forest)
- Walls of hemp shavings mixed with clay (right side of the low wall, second window)
- Walls of hemp and lime - hempcrete (the high wall facing Bines house)
- Hempcrete block walls (gable facing Bines house)
- Green roof with turf

What you will learn: the properties and applications of the materials, plus hands-on experience with building natural wall types, selecting and using surface products, and executing interior and exterior finishes.

Saturday 10 October 9:00-16:00 - Execution of surfaces
Sunday 11 October 9:00-15:00 - Completion of surfaces
