Dangerous Books: An Evening on Bans, Censorship and Confiscations
BIBLIOTEKET Rentemestervej, Copenhagen
Although art and free speech are protected in Denmark, the country has a long and colorful tradition of silencing writers. BIBLIOTEKET's literature curator Felix Rothstein shares some of the best censorship stories - from Herman Bang through pornographic novels to modern court injunctions.
The event also highlights global developments closely followed by Danish PEN and PEN International. Since 2021, around 23,000 books have been removed from American schools - particularly titles on LGBTQ+ themes and African American history - and authors and librarians face increasing pressure in large parts of the world, including Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Europe.
The event is free but requires registration on billetto.dk. It takes place in the Adult Library on the 2nd floor.
