Seminar on linguistic isolation and nonverbal communication-at O-Overgaden and online · O—Overgaden, Copenhagen
Description was written before the event

On Saturday, September 19, the exhibition IN PROTEST AND IN CARE opens with a seminar on speech difficulties, deaf gain, and nonverbal communication.

In the first panel, Anna Balch (advisor at Christianshavns Gymnasium), Vickie Mølgaard-Madsen, visual artist Marie Kølbæk Iversen, and curator Anne Kølbæk Iversen share their experiences with acquired hearing loss and deafness in a hearing world. The conversation centers on coping strategies and a shift in perspective - from the narrative of loss toward the concept of "deaf gain" - as well as sign language and Deaf culture as alternatives to the treatment and hearing aids that are the first choice in the Danish healthcare system.

In the second conversation, visual artist Lise Tovesdatter Skou and lecturer and founder of (art re.search) Sidsel Nelund present tactile works from Skou's investigations of autism as an expression of relational ecology. In her practice-based PhD project at Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Skou examines how so-called neuronormative forms of communication help maintain specific, capitalist, and Western notions of humanity as well as binary understandings of ability and disability. Using an affective-relational autoethnographic method based on her own experiences, she explores how these categories can be challenged through processual and interwoven relations.

The entire seminar is interpreted into Danish sign language. The event takes place on the ground floor. There is a 15 cm step between the entrance and the exhibition rooms - a mobile ramp can be requested. O-Overgaden has a manual wheelchair and a stair lift from street level. If you need help getting in, contact the venue before your visit at overgaden@overgaden.org or tel. +45 32 57 72 73, and a staff member will be ready to assist. The seminar can also be followed online via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85730447708?pwd=Bo9hK9k3ghp99um3BjUygpGieUnbxQ.1
