The Jazzed Murakami - Mette Holm: Saturday 24 October 2026, 20:00–22:00, BRØK, Brønshøj Kulturhus, Copenhagen. Tickets cost 180 kr.

Mette Holm, translator of Haruki Murakami's works into Danish, reads texts from Murakami's oeuvre while three musicians perform live: Makiko Hirabayashi (piano), Jan Harbech (saxophone), and Morten Ankarfeldt (bass).

The concert is divided into two parts. The first part lasts 60 minutes and draws on the short story "Charlie Parker Plays Bossa Nova" from the collection First Person Singular, published in Danish in spring 2020. In the story, Murakami has Charlie Parker play bossa nova - despite Parker never having experienced the genre. The second part is 30 minutes of excerpts from more recent works, separated from the first part by an intermission.

Throughout, the musicians explore what happens when a traditional Charlie Parker number meets bossa nova - and vice versa - and why Beethoven's First Piano Concerto plays a role in this context. Mette Holm reads and discusses the music in Murakami's literary work.
