Author Talk: Niels Krause-Kjær

"Ude for uden" is a novel about the cultural revolution that dismantled rural culture over two generations, celebrated the city, and left the provinces behind. The book is fiction, but draws on a travel journal written by Niels Krause-Kjær's father and his folk-school friends over half a century - a journal Niels discovered in the Danish National Archives.

The novel follows Erik, who as a young man was too small to participate in the resistance movement and later, as a farmer, had to help modernize Denmark after World War II. Over half a century, he confides in three friends in the travel journal they created at nineteen, while the only way of life he knows slowly disappears. Years after Erik's death, his son Svend finds the journal, and the journey back to his home region and its secrets becomes crucial for him.

Niels Krause-Kjær discusses the story behind the novel and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Coffee and pastries are served during the break.
