Church Music Through 500 Years - Concert with Nordsjællands Kammerkor
BLIK - Græsted Bibliotek, Græsted
No one knows for certain whether Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born in 1525 or 1526 - so there is still time to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his birth. Nordsjællands Kammerkor does so with this concert.
The programme spans the styles and masterworks of church music from Palestrina to the present day: music by Schütz, Buxtehude, Bach, Mozart, Bruckner, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Duruflé. The concert concludes with two contemporary compositions - Eliza Gilkyson's 'Requiem', written for the victims of the 2004 tsunami, and Vibeke Højlund's 'Domine Deus', a new work dedicated to the choir and Birgitte Øland.
Cellist Birgitte Øland from DR Symfoniorkestret accompanies the choir in selected works. The programme also includes a couple of pieces for cello and piano, where she is accompanied by the choir's conductor Vibeke Højlund.
Palestrinas worked almost his entire 70-year life at Rome's three largest churches, including St. Peter's Basilica. His compositional technique is so refined and groundbreaking that he has given his name to an entire style - the Palestrina style.
The concert is free, and registration is not required.
