World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day with Ulla Hvejsel: Thursday 19 November 2026, 19:00–21:30, Islands Brygge Bibliotek, Copenhagen. Tickets cost 60 kr.

What if what we normally consider waste is actually a valuable resource? On the UN's World Toilet Day, Islands Brygge Bibliotek focuses on access to water and sanitation - and on the taboos surrounding something as fundamental as using the toilet.

The evening opens with visual artist and performer Ulla Hvejsel, who takes the audience through the cultural history of urine. Through archaeological and apocryphal stories, she explores how urine has been used throughout history as fertilizer, detergent, and tooth whitener.

Following this is the award-winning documentary Holy Shit - Can Poop Save the World? by Ruben Abruña - Danish premiere. In the film, Abruña travels the world meeting experts and pioneers in circular sanitation, investigating whether human waste can shift from being a problem to becoming part of the solution.
