Nexø Society: Nexø and his relationship with German refugees after 1933 · Brønshøj Bibliotek, Copenhagen

Nexø Society: Nexø and German refugees: Thursday 29 October 2026, 19:00–21:00, Brønshøj Bibliotek, Copenhagen.

Martin Andersen Nexø spent four months in Munich in the winter of 1917-1918, where he met artists and politically active figures who became involved the following year in the short-lived left-wing republic in the southern German city.

Nexø soon engaged himself on the new Danish left wing until 1923, after which he moved to Germany and gradually drew closer to the Social Democrats again. He returned to Denmark in 1930, but in early 1933 he passed through the now-Nazi Germany on his way home from Italy - and subsequently threw himself into work for German refugees, predominantly communists. In 1936 he became chairman of Red Aid in Denmark and in 1937 a member of the DCP. During the Occupation he fled to Sweden and later to the Soviet Union, and after the war he spent his final years in Dresden in East Germany, where he reunited with German communists who had been in exile in Denmark.

The lecture is held by the Martin Andersen Nexø Society and takes place in the event room on the 1st floor. Free admission for society members; others pay 50 kr. at the door.
