When the Past Affects the Present

Lecture with Anna Mette Strøm Dahl: Tuesday 23 February 2027, 19:00–21:00, Hovedbiblioteket, Skive. Tickets cost 75 kr.
This lecture explores how experiences from childhood can shape our reactions, relationships, and self-worth well into adulthood. Why do we sometimes react intensely to seemingly small things? Why can certain people, words, or situations trigger something in us that is hard to put into words? And why do we keep repeating the same patterns, even when we want to do something different?
Anna Mette Strøm Dahl discusses both major events and what is often called everyday trauma - repeated or single experiences from childhood where we felt wrong, overlooked, rejected, or unsafe. As children, we adapt to belong and feel secure: we hold back emotions, become skilled, quiet, or helpful. Over time, these strategies become so automatic that we no longer notice them - but they can still shape our boundaries and reactions as adults.
The body and nervous system play a central role. When something reminds us of earlier experiences, the body can react before we have time to think about what is happening. Anna Mette explains how she works as a trauma therapist with the connection between body, emotions, nervous system, and past experiences, and how emotion-releasing trauma therapy - including EFT-Tapping - can open up new ways of responding. She draws on her experience from psychiatry, her own story, and examples from her work.
The evening also includes simple self-help exercises for everyday life.
