Victor Chakravarty: Suspended Forms & Spaces II: 23 October – 15 November 2026, Hovedbiblioteket, Aarhus. Admission is free.
Suspended Forms & Spaces II continues artist Victor Chakravarty's investigation of the Danish letter and its 400-year history, begun with Suspended Forms & Spaces I at Odense Main Library. The exhibition examines the letter as a relational medium - a way of being attentive to and connected with one another, often deprioritized in digital communication systems. It also investigates the structure of the postal service: as publicly owned infrastructure, it was unique, and until it was dismantled, it was Danes' last opportunity to opt out of the major tech companies whose data clouds and cloud storage Denmark now depends on.
The exhibition points to the shift in the relationship between capital and production over the past 25 years, which today has a technofeudal character. Chakravarty raises the question of whether, instead of dismantling the postal service and its 400-year-old infrastructure, citizens could have been asked what they wanted to do with this shared structure. The dissolution of Danish mail delivery is thus seen as part of a broader, global rollback of the commons.
The exhibition is structured in three parts. Dead Letter Office is a sculptural work that recreates elements from the postal service department that handled undeliverable letters - letters without a sender or with incomplete recipient address, which a postal worker with special permission could open to find traces of who the letter was intended for.
There are also eight site-specific photographic works that engage with the surroundings at Dokk1 and draw on the artist's own archive of over 1,000 letters sent between 2007 and 2025. Finally, a sound work is presented in which two GPTs trained on letters from Chakravarty's archive correspond with each other. The work engages with how future communication and information systems might shape a new letter culture and a new postal service - and uses the same technology that is replacing the letter.
The exhibition is supported by Den Jyske Kunstfond and the Cultural Development Fund in Aarhus K.
