Gammel Estrup — Ørsted Bibliotek, Ørsted

From the 14th century until 1926, Gammel Estrup remained in the same family's ownership. The estate was large enough to employ many staff - in the house, gardens, fields, and forests - and the owner was said at times to be so wealthy that he could shoe his horses with gold and ride from Grenå to Viborg on his own land.

In the early 1900s, times changed, and in 1926 the property was sold. Land and furnishings, collected over 600 years, were scattered far and wide. But Gammel Estrup rose again and reopened in 1930 as a nationwide museum for Danish manor houses.

From 2000 to 2025, the castle underwent extensive restoration. Britta Andersen, a cand.mag. in art history and medieval archaeology, tells the story of this transformation and shows images of the site before, during, and after the process.
