India is today the world's most populous country - a remarkably diverse nation that attracts growing international attention. Since 2014, Narendra Modi has attempted to reshape the democratic foundations created by Nehru and Gandhi.

This lecture examines these changes: the problematic trends as well as the countervailing forces that continue to give India the right to be called the world's largest democracy.
