Ovartaci

Louis Marcussen, who called himself Ovartaci, spent 56 years as a psychiatric patient while creating art that has only begun to be truly discovered in the last five years. He believed that just as the hospital had chief physicians, it should also have a chief fool - and he took on that role himself.

His life was anything but ordinary: as a young man he spent six years in Argentina living among indigenous peoples in the jungle, he undertook mental journeys back to previous lives in Egypt, China and India, and he underwent a gender transition. All of this is directly reflected in his art.

The event consists of stories about this remarkable personality with selected Ovartaci works as backdrop. The instructor is Anne Valbjørn Odgaard, cand.mag. in literary history and religious studies.
