Waiting for God with Simone Weil
Vesterbro Bibliotek og Kulturhus, Copenhagen · Free
Waiting for God with Simone Weil: Sunday 29 November 2026, 14:30–16:00, Vesterbro Bibliotek og Kulturhus, Copenhagen. Admission is free.
The French author and philosopher Simone Weil is experiencing renewed interest across Europe. Her thoughts on how industrialization and technology affect our attention, and concepts like "rootedness", resonate with many today.
This reading group explores her work through the book Waiting for God - a personal and thoughtful text about waiting for God, faith, doubt, love of neighbour, and prayer. The book moves from the biographical through the theological-philosophical to a concrete meditation on the Lord's Prayer, and consists of letters and texts Weil sent to Dominican priest Father Joseph-Marie Perrin. The Danish translation is hard to find, but a PDF version can be downloaded.
The reading group meets three Sundays: October 11 at 14:30-16:00 on faith, doubt and spiritual experiences (with a brief biographical introduction by Lukas J. Kaarby, read "Letters", p. 15-64), November 8 at 14:30-16:00 on loving God unconsciously through church actions, the world's beauty and neighbour (read "Forms of Unconscious Love of God", p. 92-157), and November 29 at 14:30-16:00 on prayer and the Lord's Prayer (read "On the Lord's Prayer", p. 158-167).
Meetings are held in the "Tom" room in the adult section on the ground floor of Vesterbro Library. There is room for only 12 people, so registration is required - send an email to parish priest Niels Nymann Eriksen at nne@km.dk. Participation is free.
