Author Talk with Niels Krause-Kjær

Niels Krause-Kjær is best known as a political journalist and author of political thrillers including "Kongekabale" (later adapted into a film), "Mørkeland", "Fandens forår", "Nedsmeltning", and "Jagttegn".

His latest novel "Ude for uden", published in August 2005, stands apart from his earlier work. It draws inspiration from a real travel journal he discovered in the Danish National Archives - written by his father and his father's folk high school friends over half a century. The novel portrays a Denmark where rural society vanished within decades, the city became the ideal, and the provinces lost ground in a new cultural reality.

At the centre is Erik, a young farmer who, after World War II, struggles to build a future for himself and his family. He and his wife Lisbet live a life of hard work, drought, tragedy, and hope, while the way of life and culture they know slowly dissolves. Years after Erik's death, his son Svend finds the journal - he lives a completely different life in Copenhagen as a member of parliament, caught in the media spotlight with secrets that threaten his political career.

Niels Krause-Kjær discusses inheritance, identity, and the social changes that have shaped Denmark, drawing on the novel and the travel journal that inspired it. The event takes place in the Hall at Give Library.
