Writing Workshop: Children's Literature

Do you have an idea for a children's book but aren't sure how to get started? This workshop offers inspiration for writing literature for children and young people in both short and long formats. We'll explore elements such as narrative voice, opening, plot and language, and work through a series of short writing exercises.

About the instructor

Cecilie Eken made her debut in 1993 and has since written for children and young people in many forms: picture books, poetry, novels and series. A thread running through her work is the desire to tell about big - and sometimes difficult - subjects in a way children can understand. As she puts it: "For me it becomes easier to talk about when I'm not forced to write entirely realistically, but can approach big subjects in a more fairy-tale-like way."

Eken is a member of the Danish Academy and has received, among other awards, the Danish Ministry of Culture's Children's Book Prize (twice), the School Librarians' Children's Book Prize and the Danish Academy's Silas Prize. In 2019 she was nominated for the Nordic Council's Children's and Young People's Literature Prize for the novel 'Strength (Karanagalaksen Log I)'. Most recently, the picture book 'Omnia's House' with illustrations by Maren Tjelta Thu was published in 2023, and the long poem 'The Strongest' about children and war in 2024.

Practical information

The workshop is for adults and runs from 17:00-19:00 at BIBLIOTEKET Rentemestervej, Salen, 3rd floor - accessible via the main staircase or lift from the main entrance. There are no desks, so bring a laptop or paper, and water and snacks as needed. Participation is free but requires registration on Billetto.
