City Walk: The Brutal History of Punishment

Copenhagen Museum explores the history of punishment on this city walk - from public shaming and executions in the 1500s to the first modern prisons in the 1800s. Along the way, we examine a time when punishment and humiliation were visible parts of the justice system: not merely as sentence, but as deterrent and stigma.

The tour raises questions about how our ideas of crime and justice have changed. Should punishment avenge, reform, or permanently mark the condemned? And what role did the penal system play in society's view of crime?

The route starts at the Courthouse on Nytorv and ends at Kastellet.
