The Great Sledge Journey and the Little Woman

A lecture based on Kirsten Hastrup's book "The Little Woman", by the professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Copenhagen. The book follows Arnarulúnguaq, a Greenlandic woman who participated in Knud Rasmussen's 5th Thule Expedition (1921-1924) and played a far greater role than she has typically been credited with.

Hastrup portrays Arnarulúnguaq's life and contributions during the expedition, where her experience of life in the Arctic was crucial. The book also paints a picture of the extreme conditions and Greenlandic everyday life in the early 1900s - and raises the question of why Greenlandic participants have so often been overlooked in the historiography of polar expeditions.
