The Quantum Computer

This lecture introduces the fundamental concepts of quantum physics and the "quantum revolution" that is driving new technology based on the most paradoxical quantum phenomena. Central to the discussion is how quantum computers work and what they can be used for.

The world of atoms and molecules differs markedly from everyday physics: atomic particles appear to exist in multiple places at once, and measurements on them always yield random results. Quantum physics revolutionized physics in the early 20th century, and its predictions have since been confirmed with great precision in both physics and chemistry.

Since the 1990s, large sums have been invested - in Denmark and internationally - in the race to build quantum computers that use atomic quantum states to calculate many numbers simultaneously. The lecture examines how far construction has progressed and what these computers will be able to do once fully functional.
