Rediscovered: Feminist Classics from Africa - from Aidoo to Adichie

Moussa Mchangama and Ingrid Magnifique Baraka meet for a conversation about African feminist literature - and why so many of these books have never reached European readers, despite their significance.

Among the works they discuss are Mariama Bâ's So Long a Letter (Senegal, 1979), Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood (Nigeria, 1979), Ama Ata Aidoo's Our Sister Killjoy (Ghana, 1977) and Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions (Zimbabwe, 1988). The books explore freedom, desire, motherhood, colonialism, education and belonging - and the fundamental question of shaping one's own life when those around you have already decided who you should be. The conversation draws lines to the present and examines what these classics have meant for authors like Imbolo Mbue, Akwaeke Emezi and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
